Amazon Prime,HotStar,Spuul,Voot,NETFLIX & Hungama TV in tight race at India Leadership Conclave’s 2017 title India’s Most Promising Digital streaming service Provider 2017
In many ways, India’s tryst with cable television represents a Bildungsroman for the middle class. After liberalisation in 1991, cable TV shattered state-owned network Doordarshan’s staid monopoly, and old, crackling radios gave way to booming television sets
The Indian Media and Entertainment (M&E) industry is a sunrise sector for the economy and is making high growth strides. Proving its resilience to the world, the Indian M&E industry is on the cusp of a strong phase of growth, backed by rising consumer demand and improving advertising revenues. The industry has been largely driven by increasing digitization and higher internet usage over the last decade. Internet has almost become a mainstream media for entertainment for most of the people. The Indian media & entertainment sector is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 14.3 per cent to touch Rs 2.26 trillion (US$ 33.9 billion) by 2020, while revenues from advertising is expected to grow at 15.9 per cent to Rs 99,400 crore (US$ 14.91 billion).
If we look back few years, there was nothing such as music streaming services. Music was primarily available to purchase only through physical media and in digital form through few websites of music labels, which was absurdly priced. And sadly, there was no concept of paying for things such as songs, videos & movies.
India Leadership Conclave takes an overview of the current market & the leading players.
India’s Most Promising Digital streaming service Provider 2017
1. Amazon Prime.(79)
6. Hungama TV.(84)
Amazon has launched its Prime Video service in India at a competitive annual subscription price of Rs 499 (US$ 7.48), with a one-month free trial, including range of Hollywood as well as international movies, TV Shows and nine Indian original shows, in its content library.
Hotstar, a digital streaming platform owned by Star India Ltd, has entered into a partnership with Zapr Media Labs, a media tech company based in Bengaluru, to perform analysis on mobile audience that can be leveraged by brands to create personalised communication.
Global video-streaming service Netflix has entered India as high-speed Internet connectivity is becoming rapidly available to Indians and nearly one-fifth of India’s 1.3 billion population is now online.
Hungama has videos, which can be downloaded offline or purchased and a mood-based DJ to discover new music. Each service also has a Radio where you can listen to endless songs, much like the ill-fated MixRadio. Gaana has even partnered with Radio Mirchi for the Radio service, and is also the only one which offers gapless playback options in its app.
VOOT from Viacom18’s stable and Sony LIV from Multi Screen Media, are both ad-based. Zee Entertainment’s DittoTV, which launched in 2012 with a subscription plan of Rs 99 per month, provides a cautionary tale. Largely because it ignored the ad-based model, its subscription rates have now come down to Rs 20 per month. A January 2016 report by the consultancy EY predicts that despite the growth in earning population and mobile wallets, streaming services in India will settle for a freemium model
